What is the Big Dog Arctic Challenge?
To celebrate two years in business the Big Dog Consultancy has chosen to mark the occasion by going ‘Dog Sledding in the Arctic’ in the New Year. Suzannah Sorrell, director and Jarowan Power, photographer, will set off on the 27th January 2008.
Their aim is to raise £10,000 for Sled Dog Welfare and the Great Dane Adoption Society.
Make no mistake, this is no post-christmas holiday. Temperatures are expected to be as low as -35 degrees and the risk of blizzards and snow storms are high. Apres Sledge involves the risk of hypothermia, frost bite, frozen eyes and dehydration! Less life threatening, but equally important, is the lack of showers for five days, no running water and the exceptionally basic toilet facilities (think hole in the snow!). In addition, participants are expected to establish ‘pack leader’ status to keep their own pack of five working huskies under control and be responsible for feeding and general welfare of the dogs for the duration of the trip.
The seven day, 200 kilometre challenge, begins and ends in Alta, northern Norway. The journey will involve traveling through forests, mountainous terrain and frozen lakes. The highlight of the trip, besides the beautiful huskies, will be the Northern Lights, a natural light specticle which promises to be mind blowing. And finally, Norways version of Sweden’s famous Ice Hotel will be a great place to mark the end of the trip with a large Vodka or two!
