No ‘cert’ but…

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Lady Kildare ticks enough boxes for the Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over five furlongs at Catterick today; one of them is apprentice Patrick Donaghy, claiming 5lbs allowance.

Although drawn widest in stall nine Lady Kildare possesses plenty of speed, as witnessed over course and distance twenty-six days ago when a close third (beaten less than a length!) by Clipthorne.

That represented considerable improvement on debut and with Jedd O’Keeffe’s yard now in much better form Lady Kildare is selected to reverse placings with forecast-favourite, Orchid Street, and make it third time lucky.

With fields of less than ten the draw has little significance; most important is early speed and Lady Kildare will provide a leg of my each-way double!

Second leg will be Quite Sparky, one of six ‘decs’ for the Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs, ridden by Micky Fenton.

One of the real attributes of a jockey is nous; Fenton is one of the shrewdest and most experienced around and thinks out the game.

This North Yorkshire track is one of the trickiest (be wary of backing apprentices there!) and Micky is journeying North primarily to partner Quite Sparky for trainer Tom Tate, another right shrewdie and brother -in-law of Michael Dickinson. ‘No flies on him!’ as the saying goes.

Selections, Catterick, 2.10 Lady Kildare (e.w); 5.00 Quite Sparky; Kempton, 7.20 Marching Song (e.w); Chepstow, 6.40 Rossetti.

Fabio Capello!

originally he was considered worth millions for his experience and expertise, now his squad has failed the 64-year-old ‘they’ are calling for his head!

perhaps the people who employed him should be sacked, if he’s an inept as the papers/scribes would have us believe.

‘you can’t  make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear’ is the old saying, capello now knows that but don’t get rid of a man with a brain at a time when positive thinking is in urgent demand.

we live in a world of instant-ism, NOW is the time to allow capello to take stock and develop a youith policy in time for the next world cup; as we always say on new year’s day, ‘out with the old…!’

patience is the supreme virtue until we run out of time…there are four years before the next World Cup, use it wisely and re-build but don’t ‘get rid’ of valuable, experienced proven individuals like Fabio Capello!

Let him stay, let him prove himself, if he’s really of a mind to totally apply his brain to the task that awaits.

* footnote…alan shearer is vociferous in his criticism of capello but didn’t he fail to keep newcastle in the premiership, didn’t he criticise mike ashley who stuck to his guns (and manager!) and now is able to look forward to the fruits of premiership soccer next season?

Ashley is still there and, amazingly, extremely popular for all he has achieved for Newcastle United; go back 365 days, eh?

Paul is the man!

‘Come on Mayson!’ will be the cry of Scottish punters at Hamilton today!
Richard Fahey is about to launch a clutch of useful two-year-olds, by all accounts, and Mayson is napped to improve on a promising recent debut and go one better in the Maiden Stakes over five furlongs.
Juvenile sprints become easier to win at this time of year and Mayson achieved a ‘alf-decent’ time-handicap mark when a neck second at York earlier this month. A solid betting proposition and so is stable-companion Gritstone in the all-aged handicap over nine furlongs.
Gritstone was taken out of a ‘penalty-kick’ a few days back, probably due to a very firm surface; ‘watering’ has taken place for this seven-race programme and, hopefully, this Dansili gelding will provide a double for Fahey and championship-chasing stable jockey, Paul Hanagan.

Sumerian, blinkered following creditable efforts, is expected to make it third time lucky in the five-runner Maiden Stakes over ten furlongs of Brighton; Newmarket trainer, Sir Mark Prescott, will be extremely vexed and disappointed if this well-bred Medicean filly doesn’t prevail.
On my time-handicap Sumerian is clear ‘best-in’ judged on her recent second to unchallenged Kempton winner, Mirror Lake, a potential graded prospect.
Whether or not blinkers are necessary is irrelevant, Prescott obviously needs to make sure because Sumerian is doubtless being primed for the paddocks, where winners are valuable.

Selection, Brighton, 3.00 Sumerian; Hamilton, 2.15 Mayson (nap); 3.45 Gritstone (e.w); Stratford, 6.40 Decison.

Summat to sup…!

Premier Clarets must not be missed at Pontefract where Richard Fahey’s charge is napped for the Spindrifter Stakes over six furlongs.
Only four ran last year but today all seven ‘decs’ are previous winners, befitting Spindrifter, a serial winnner long ago when trained by a youthful Mark Prescott for the Waters family.
Thrice-raced Premier Clarets won second time out but improved considerably when third to High Waters in the ‘Woodcote’ on Epsom Derby day; a reproduction of that form should guarantee victory because it’s unlikely any will cope with such a lofty time-handicap mark.
Paul Hanagan rides, couldn’t be better and haven’t we got a sterling contest brewing up for the jockeys’ championship?
Hanagan continues to vie for the lead with Ryan Moore, two ahead of richard Hughes with Frankie Dettori hanging in there just waiting for Godolphin to fire, big-time!
Ryan is long odds-on favourite but this title race is far from cut ‘n dried with the ‘managen’ about to edge ahead on ‘clarets!’
Another good bet is Kielder in the six-runner Maiden Stakes over six furongs; a time-comparison will be interesting!
Kielder should prove ‘different gravy’ even though trainer David Barron will have been frustrated by a recent below-par effort. If he doesn’t win this…!

Selections, Pontefract, 3.15 Premier Clarets (nap); 4.45 Kielder; Windsor, 6.40 Never Can Stop (e.w); 7.40 Blackdown Boy (e.w).
