‘Loco’ over ‘Cliffs!’
Just how good is Canford Cliffs and how far can he go?
We’ll find out today when Richard Hannon’s charge takes on a clutch of real ‘creme crackers’ in the group one, £300000 Sussex Stakes over a mile of Glorious Goodwood; there will be no hiding place, what a race in prospect.
Rip Van Winkle won it last year and attempts to follow up under Ryan Moore, deputising for suspended Johnny Murtagh; unfortunately ‘Rip’ doesn’t seem to be anything like the same thoroughbred this time round and Aidan O’Brien has already notified us that this Galileo colt will be better for the run.
That’s good of Aidan but it’s still far from cut ‘n dried with stable-companion, Beethoven, ridden by his son, Joseph, who can’t claim his 7lbs allowance!
What’s that all about?
Right, the Irish challenge is sorted but both Premio Loco and Dream Eater seem to be progressing and come out similarly on my time-handicap.
Value-wise Premio Loco makes good sense and each-way (if all eight run!) is suggested as a sound betting proposition.
Far from a picturesque scene, and madding crowds, Piddie’s Power attmpts to make it fifth time lucky and retrieve recent losses in the Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs of Redcar; what beats her will win this moderate dash.
Only fifteen days ago Ed McMahon’s charge was beaten less than a length in a Beverley handicap, flattening out in the last strides on the stiff climb of an extended seven after looking certain to win. It was a ‘career best!’
Judged on that good, recent form and from a stable which is firing 100% Piddie’s Power looks a ’special’ even though both Bideeya and Uddy Mac will go to post fancied on the back of half-decent last time efforts.
An intriguing race, Piddie’s Pride must win, for breeding purposes!
Selection, Goodwood, 3.25 Premio Loco (e.w); Redcar, 3.10 Piddie’s Pride; Leicester, 6.10 Grandma’s Dream (nap); 7.45 West Leake Bridge (e.w).
